Grapefruit is a refreshing although slightly acidic citrus fruit perfect for breakfast. To some grapefruit can be quite tart and or bitter and seem more of an acquired taste. However I now have it regularly and find it a really fresh zingy taste, a great pick me up first thing.
How to eat grapefruit for breakfast? There are three main ways I have grapefruit at breakfast:
- fresh grapefruit
- toasted grapefruit
- grapefruit juice
I am often on a diet and grapefruit, a superfood, full of vitamin C is great when trying to have a cleanse. Grapefruit has a high water content.
The skins on grapefruit are always yellow or with a hint of pink. Inside the flesh varies from red-pink-yellow. The ruby red flesh has a sweeter taste.
Segmenting a Grapefruit
The easiest way to eat a grapefruit is to segment it. The easiest way to do this is using a serrated knife. You can actually purchase grapefruit knifes / spoons for this purpose (see the end of this post).
Segmenting – cut the top and bottom off the fruit. Cut the peel away from the sides removing any pith as you go. Then cut between the membranes to remove each segment. It can be a bit messy but totally worth it.
If I am being healthy then it is fresh grapefruit. Alone or with a fruit salad, it is delicious with orange.
On a cold morning having a toasted grapefruit is a great start to the day. The idea is to slightly caramelise the top of the fruit under the grill. This can be done with just sugar, brown sugar is my favourite for this.
Another option is to brush melted butter over the top of the grapefruit before sprinkling with sugar. Alternatives or additions include honey or cinnamon.
Pop the grapefruit under the grill until the sugar bubbles and browns slightly.
Another way I like to enjoy grapefruit in the morning is to have it as juice. You can buy grapefruit juice in most supermarkets but it is just as easy to juice yourself.Print Recipe
